Alternately bitchy, funny, moving and deadpan, this candid behind-the-scenes peek at the first "World's Most Beautiful Transsexual Pageant" makes for riveting viewing. The setting is Las Vegas (natch), where six finalists compete to win the coveted crown ana s spot starring in a glittering Vegas revue show. The soul of the film is found in the interviews and intimate portraits of each contestant -- complete with often emotional footage of their family, hometown life and their individual struggles of being different. Much like last year's version of "American Idol," the audience becomes intimate with each colorful character, forcing the viewer to pick sentimental favorites. Each undergoes elaborate gender-bending transformations as they compete in the different categories leading up to the flamboyant finale.
